Four to seven students per class

*Note for 2026; classes with woven seats will use flat reed. It’s become increasing difficult to obtain hickory bark in the quantities needed for classes. Students can bring and substitute bark for if they obtain it.

#207 Chair

May 18-22, 2026

$1,550

A 5-day class, students will shape the parts and build a contemporary greenwood ladderback chair.

We will split parts from the log, make the chair, and weave in the seat on the last day. We will steam bend the back posts, along with materials for the slats (I will pre-make some parts. Those made in class, that are still wet from the log, will be swapped with the ready parts.)

This is an ideal project as a first chair or for those interested in a new challenge. We’ll spend much of the week with a drawknife and spokeshave in our hands.

Students need to bring a small tool kit.

The Hoop Stool

June 11-13, 2026

$850

In this 3-day class, students will work towards the completion of two stools. The stools look great in either the shop or the kitchen. We’ll fully assemble one, and progress towards the second (getting as far as time allows).

This is a green woodworking class. We’ll shape parts from the log before bending them. The seat is carved from eastern white pine. Then we assemble, driving the legs into the seat and fitting the hoop stretcher.

I’ll prep some parts ahead of time (putting the S-bends to the legs, as one example). Then we’ll make and replace those parts during class.

We’ll end class with one completed stool, and a second that is well on it’s way.

A good class for all skill levels.

Wooden Carriers

July 9-11, 2026

$825

Over three days, students will fully make one carrier, and have the parts made and ready to complete the remaining two in their home shops.

This is a dovetail heavy class. We’ll work together to layout all three boxes, then students will cut, chop, and fit their sides. Once one box is together, we’ll nail on the bottom and add the steam bent handle.

Students will carve the cross hatching to the handle and the pegs to the case.

Open to all skill levels. Familiarity with tools is helpful, though everyone will find succuss in this course.

Students need to bring a small tool kit.

Lounge Chair

October 19-24, 2026

$1,700

Over six days, we’ll build a greenwood lounge chair. Working with fresh red oak, we’ll shave our parts and steam bend the curves. The arms are made of kiln dried material to keep from changing dimensions after assembly. Our goal will be to build the chair in five days, with the sixth day spent weaving in the flat reed (Hickory bark is a great option here as well. Students can bring their own if they’d like to weave in hickory bark).

Depending on the pace of the class, some weaving may happen after our time together.

Open to all skill levels. There’s a challenge here, with significant bends and the shapely arms. We’ll have a full six days to get this one made. Final sanding, prep, and some of the weaving to be completed at home.

Students need to bring a small tool kit.

Stick Chair Studio w/ Charles Thompson & Andy Glenn

August 10-15, 2026

$1,850

What makes a good stick chair? Well, there are plenty of answers to that question. No two stick chairs are quite the same. There’s a bit of alchemy in making them: one part creative impulse, one part inherent material characteristics, one part desired functionality. In this class, we’ll explore some of the things that make stick chairs special.

Students will each have the opportunity to imagine, design, and build their own unique chair. These can be based on provided forms, historic examples, or something entirely new. We’ll tackle the design process with individual attention and as a class under the guidance of instructors Andy Glenn and Charles Thompson. Then, through a mixture of greenwoodworking and working with dry stock, we’ll bring our chairs into the world.

Some questions we can expect to tackle are: What’s comfortable? What proportions should I aim for? How tall, thick, or thin should this part be? How can I guide an eye around my work? What joint works here?

There is pre-class prep. We ask each student to sketch their chair idea before our zoom meeting. We’ll prepare materials to best realize the chair. Then, during the class, students will have the time and space to pursue their ideas.

While experience building chairs may help inform new ideas, no expertise is necessary.

Six day course. Two instructors: Charles Thompson and Andy Glenn. Students will need to bring a small tool kit (and we’ll have tools to share).

Lodging

  • There are an abundance of options in the area and I suggest making a reservation early, as the Midcoast region is a gorgeous place that attracts scores of visitors each year (mostly during the summer months). The workshop is located on a quiet, rural road roughly halfway between the towns of Rockland and Damariscotta.

Area:

  • Midcoast Maine is beautiful, with the granite coastline, rugged terrain, and stone fences and rolling homesteads. The landscape draws people from around the world.

  • There’s plenty to do as well. The area is steeped in traditional craft, with furniture makers, tool makers, timber framers, boat builders, and working artists found throughout the region. Galleries showcase the work.

The midcoast holds a couple of furniture making schools; The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship and the Maine Coast Craft School.

The shop’s located just 2 miles from Lie Nielsen Toolworks, and about 30 minutes from Liberty Tools (the renowned used hand tools spot that draws craftspeople from all of New England).

  • Beyond art and craft galleries in the ares, there are great dining options. From seafood shacks to James Beard Award winning restaurants, the area has options for everyone. There’s far more than seafood……
